Area Description

Location

Southcentral Kodiak Island, including Zachar Bay and the entire Zachar River drainage. Area map (Image file 94 kB).

Topography and Habitat

The Zachar river valley is moderately sloped with dense alder and cottonwoods. It is surrounded by mountainous terrain with dense alder thickets interspersed with grass/salmonberry meadows. Alpine vegetation dominates the areas above 1500'. Southern portion of hunt area is extremely rugged with permanent snowfields, rugged peaks, and steep relief.

Land Ownership

Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge manages most of the lands, with some Koniag Inc. and private lands along portions of Zachar Bay.

Public Use Cabins

A few lodges are located within Zachar Bay, but no public use cabins.
