Area Description (USGS Maps – Kodiak B-5, B-6, C-5 & C-6)

Location: Southcentral Kodiak Island, including Zachar Bay and the entire Zachar River drainage. area map (Image file 94 kB).

Topography and Habitat: The Zachar river valley is moderately sloped with dense alder and cottonwoods. It is surrounded by mountainous terrain with dense alder thickets interspersed with grass/salmonberry meadows. Alpine vegetation dominates the areas above 1500'. Southern portion of hunt area is extremely rugged with permanent snowfields, rugged peaks, and steep relief.

Land Ownership: Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge manages most of the lands, with some Koniag Inc. and private lands along portions of Zachar Bay.

Public Use Cabins: A few lodges are located within Zachar Bay, but no public use cabins.
