Also, the recent year’s marine fishing harvest success data can be found by following the link above right, “marine harvest rates”.

Steelhead

  • Situk Steelhead angling was fair to good last week especially in areas of the upper river
  • Most fish are moving up river and beginning to spawn
  • The area spawning closure 2 miles above the 9 mile bridge is in effect as of April 15
  • Fish are also moving into the lower river on each tide but most are moving up quickly
  • Float angling has been more productive as of late due to high water flows
  • Temperatures are higher than normal promoting an early spawn

Dolly Varden and trout

  • Dolly Varden are very abundant in the middle and upper Situk River
  • Cutthroat trout are still abundant in some small streams in the area but have moved into very small spawning tributaries
  • Dollies will be actively feeding in salmon spawning areas all summer, and also in areas with abundant salmon fry at stream mouths

Ocean Chinook and Halibut

  • Chinook angling has been reportedly slow recently
  • There has not been a lot of effort in the Chinook fishery so far this year
  • Halibut angling was productive for the few anglers that tried it last week
  • Both medium and large halibut were harvested, mostly from the inner bay areas
  • Herring spawning began last week and will continue for 10 days or so.
