Situk River Steelhead

Steelhead are spread out in all areas of the Situk River

  • Small schools were coming in with each tide last week with the warm temperatures
  • Fish are more abundant up river
  • Hard rains in the last few days have cooled the water a bit and brought the flows up making angling more difficult for now, but flows are lowering quickly.

Trout and Dollies

  • A few dollies are moving into the Situk River middle sections
  • Pink salmon fry have started out early this year and are moving in large schools down the river
  • Dollies are targeting these small salmon and will take fry imitation flies and lures
  • Cutthroat have moved up into many small streams in the area in preparation to spawn
  • Cutthroat will take an assortment of flies or small spinners

Groundfish

  • Halibut angling is just starting to get going
  • Anglers are finding fish in close to shore likely because of increased herring numbers in the bay
  • Rough weather of late has lowered the early season effort

Salt Water Chinook

  • Chinook trolling has been fair up in the upper bay
  • Medium and small fish have been caught in various spots up in the bay usually close to shore
  • Herring schools have attracted Chinook, but as the herring spawn nears that will also attract predators making angling more difficult
  • A fair number of white kings have been reported lately in some catches
