Angling reports in winter (November- February) for the Yakutat area typically focus on steelhead in the Situk River, and Chinook angling in salt waters of Yakutat Bay. Angling for both of these species begins in earnest in early spring (March-April).

Chinook update

 

  • Chinook fishing improved some last week
  • Some baitfish have also moved into the back of Yakutat Bay and have attracted predators
  • Angling success is improving but has been spotty
  • Ocean temperatures are above normal

Steelhead Update

 

  • River water temperatures have warmed and steelhead angling is fair
  • Steelhead have entered the lower river in low numbers
  • Scattered fish can be found in the middle river glides, and in pockets upstream
  • Water flows are variable and have changed often from heavy rains
  • No snow is along the river
  • All roads are open
