Angling reports in winter (November- February) for the Yakutat area typically focus on steelhead in the Situk River, and Chinook angling in salt waters of Yakutat Bay. Angling for both of these species begins in earnest in early spring (March-April).

Chinook update

 

  • Chinook trolling out in the bay improved in recent days
  • Chinook have been caught in shallow waters back by Chicago harbor
  • Baitfish are present in many areas of the inner islands
  • Rod hours are still long to get a fish but angling consistently improves each week

Steelhead Update

 

  • Steelhead angling has been fair in the lower river and good up stream
  • Bright sunny days slow the bite but new fish move in daily
  • Water temperatures are well above normal
  • Water flows are lower than normal
  • Rains have muddied the waters recently due to lack of snow and fast runoff.
