Small Game Hunting

Session I — Ptarmigan, grouse, and hare can make a tasty dinner. Learn where to find them and what equipment you'll need. Learn how to care for, and field-dress small game. We will also share some of our favorite recipes to get you started.

Session II — Learn to identify small game species and their preferred habitats. Participants will have the opportunity to venture into the field with Small Game Biologist, Rick Merizon, to observe hare, grouse and ptarmigan habitat.

Adventuring with Survival in Mind

Adventures are always, well, an adventure! But how do you make sure to stay safe by bringing the right gear, choosing the right route, and making sure to carry exactly what you need? This class will help you adventure with confidence. Instructors will cover map reading, how to use a GPS, what to bring along and what to leave at home, how to construct a simple survival kit, just in case, and what to do in case you have to spend a night in the woods.

Introduction to Chainsaws

Getting to know your chainsaw and how it works in an important part of learning how to properly use this power tool. This class will teach you about limbing, trimming, bucking and felling a tree – all with safety in mind. Our instructors will cover the importance of using the right fuel and oil mixture, how to check the tool before each use, and proper handling. We welcome those 12 and over for this class.

Waterfowl Hunting

Learn the fundamentals of bird hunting on the Mendenhall State Game Refuge including gear and ammunition selection, distance estimation, setting up decoys, calling in ducks, and how to construct a blind. This two-part class will consist of an evening classroom portion and a next-day field portion. Those under 18 attend free with a paying adult.
