Our Mission

The mission of the Gene Conservation Laboratory is to apply genetic principles and tools to support the management of commercially important fish and shellfish species in Alaska based on the sustained yield principle.

Our goal is to protect Alaska’s genetic resources by protecting the genetic integrity of wild populations.

  • Identify the best broodstock for a hatchery
  • Guide the release of hatchery-reared salmon and marine species
  • Restrict the transfer of salmon between river drainages
