Some State Game Refuges and Critical Habitat Areas have changed!

The boundaries of Cape Newenham SGR, Izembek SGR, Palmer Hay Flats SGR, Port Moller CHA, Egegik CHA, Pilot Point CHA, Fox River Flats CHA, and Kachemak Bay CHA have been updated by the passage of Senate Bill 230 Alaska State Legislature as of June 5, 2026. 

New maps of the boundaries will be posted as soon as possible, please check back for updates.

Chagvan Bay, the primary feature of the Cape Newenham State Game Refuge, is a shallow estuary with large eelgrass beds located on the shores of the Bering Sea just north of Cape Newenham. The name "Chagvan" means "briskly flowing water" in the local Yupik language, and refers to the rapid tidal action in the bay.
