George Lake Cabin

View of the cabin in winter. The George Lake Cabin is located on the northwest shore of George Lake, north of the Tanana River and 37 miles southeast of Delta Junction. George Lake is approximately 4,560 acres and contains northern pike, burbot, and whitefish. For more lake information, please visit the Alaska Lake Database.

Amenities: George Lake cabin sleeps six adults and is equipped with plywood bunks, benches, a table, wood stove, broom and dustpan, shovel, smoke/carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher, outdoor fire ring, picnic table, and nearby outhouse.

Directions: GPS Coordinates: Latitude: N 63.792181 Longitude: W 144.521554. This cabin can be accessed from the Tanana River Access at MP 1385 of the Alaska Highway. There is a double-ended pullout on the east side of the highway with an access road to an unimproved boat launch at the bottom of the hill.

Summer access: Travel by jet boat via the Tanana River and George Creek or by float plane. Be aware that George Creek is narrow, shallow and has multiple blind corners. The upper 1/3 of the creek has several areas where two-way boat traffic is extremely difficult. Please use extreme caution and stop at the posted signs to listen for oncoming traffic. The Tanana River in this area is very braided with standing waves and shifting channels. Boating to George Lake should only be attempted by experienced boat drivers. In recent years, low water levels in spring and late summer / fall have made the boat launch nearly unusable and accessing George Creek from the Tanana River quite difficult.

Winter access: Travel by ski-plane, snowmachine, snowshoes, skis or dog team from the Tanana River Access. This route requires crossing the frozen Tanana River, connecting to an overland trail on the north bank of the river (N 63.772834, W 144.683513, approximately 2.5 miles), and then crossing George Lake (about 3 miles) to the cabin (approximately 6.7 miles total from the parking area). Routes from the launch crossing the river to the overland trail vary from year to year depending on freeze-up conditions. Please be advised that the Tanana River in this area may not freeze up until late December / January and may begin breaking up in late-March/mid-April depending on weather. Ice conditions can change quickly, so please exercise extreme caution.

Special Notes: All other land surrounding the lake is privately owned, so please be respectful. Pets are allowed but should be under your control, and you are responsible for cleaning up your pet waste. Be aware that unmarked traplines may be present along trails. Trap Safety for Pet Owners.

What to bring: Cabin users should bring a sleeping bag and pad, food, cookware, dishes, utensils, cooking stove and fuel, matches, lighters, paper fire starters, first aid items, insect repellent, plastic trash bags, firewood (maximum length of 17 inches), axe, flashlight, lantern, water or some way to purify water onsite, and 2 AA batteries for the smoke/carbon monoxide detector.
