Heritage Harbor Boat Launch
Description
This project provided funding to construct a marine launch ramp in Wrangell Alaska. Prior to this project, there was only one completely functional boat ramp in Wrangell. Shoemaker Harbor was constructed in 1989 through the Sport Fish Restoration Boating Access program (F-13-D-4) and is located approximately 5 miles south of the city center. Although it offers good access south of Wrangell, most boaters wanting access to the Stikine River or the marine waters to the north would still try and use the old dilapidated ramp in town. The town ramp is only a section of asphalt put in years ago with no parking or staging area, it is only usable at high tides, and has a poor approach off the street. In 2005 the US Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of a new breakwater to form the new Heritage Harbor. This was an ideal site for a new launch ramp, located only ½ mile south of the city center and had overwhelming public support.

Purpose
The purpose of this project was to construct a safe, fully functional marine boat launch ramp near downtown Wrangell that would provide good access to the northern marine waters and the Stikine River.
Outcome
The original design included a paved parking area and restroom facility, however, the cost estimate was over budget and these items were dropped from the project. However, the scaled down version did not off set the main objectives and construction of the new facility was completed in the summer of 2008. The new ramp offers 24/7 launching with plenty of parking available. Anglers and recreational boaters now have two very functional and safe launch options in Wrangell.
