Small Game

Observing, photographing, and hunting small game, such as ptarmigan, grouse, and hares, are popular activities for many Alaskan residents and non-residents alike. Populations of small game species can fluctuate widely from year to year, or over the course of several years depending on spring weather conditions and predator densities. The department monitors populations trends of the more heavily hunted, road-accessible populations of small game. The department also conducts research to better understand movement, distribution, and effects of hunting on grouse and ptarmigan. Input on weather patterns, observations, and hunting reports are also highly valued. The department compiles an annual report summarizing abundance survey and statewide wing collection results, recent Board of Game action, small game research update, and harvest projections for the upcoming small game season.
