Alaska Wild Salmon Day
(Juneau) – August 10 marks the second annual Alaska Wild Salmon Day, as established by the Alaska Legislature on May 8, 2016. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game joins with all Alaskans as we pause to celebrate and honor these resilient icons of our state. Staff from the Divisions of Sport Fish, Commercial Fisheries, Subsistence, and Habitat all work hard throughout the year to ensure that all five Pacific salmon species found in Alaska have access to healthy habitats, are sustainably managed, and available for all uses. The department's mission is to "protect, maintain, and improve" our fisheries resources in the "best interest of the economy and the well-being of the people of Alaska." Fish and Game is proud to steward Alaska salmon resources.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Sam Cotten said, "no matter how you choose to harvest our wild salmon, by subsistence, personal use, sport, or commercial means, Alaskan's connection to our salmon runs deep in our culture. Today, we encourage all Alaskans to join in the celebration of this shared resource of wild Alaska salmon."
