Freshwater Angling Update

Situk River- The sockeye run is still going strong in the Situk River although the weir counts are just now starting to slow down a bit. Fresh sockeye are still common all the way up to 9 mile bridge.

Pink salmon numbers at the lower river continue to grow. 12,000 pinks went through since 7-28

A few early silvers have been seen here and there. Coho angling success typically increases as August progresses, and peaks in early September.

Water conditions are low and clear. Sockeye spawning has started in earnest in many areas. Dolly Varden are common in the spawning fish areas.

Foreland streams-

Most other small streams in the area are at very low water levels right now. Cutthroat trout are pooled up in the lager holes in many small streams, and in holes with lots of woody debris for cover.

Marine Angling

Halibut and rockfish angling remain excellent. Effort has slipped a bit as is usual for this time of year in Yakutat. Expect effort to increase as the coho abundance increases.

Coho angling has been good for the early season so far. Trollers are getting good sized fish.

Chinook angling has all but ceased but a few are being caught by coho anglers. Always a good idea to have a Chinook stamp in any case this time of year.

Regulations require all chartered anglers to use a deepwater release device if they release non pelagic rockfish.
