Freshwater Angling Update

Situk River – Steelhead are beginning to show up in the upper stretches of the river. Rains over the weekend brought the river back up to normal flows, but the river temperature decreased. Snow early in the week cooled the water further. Anglers are still finding a few steelhead in the lower river. Scattered steelhead  schools are now found throughout the system now, although fewer are being reported above nine mile bridge.

No cutthroat trout have been reported yet in area streams.

Marine Angling Update

Halibut angling improves with spring temperatures in early spring. Anglers are just now beginning to look for halibut in Yakutat Bay.

A small herring spawn occurred last week inside the islands of Yakutat Bay.

Winter Chinook angling in salt waters can generally be good in Yakutat Bay when weather allows.
Chinook abundance is reportedly high in salt water for 2014.

For salt water anglng:
Resident anglers can keep 3 Chinook salmon in per day in 2014.
Nonresident anglers can retain 1 Chinook salmon per day in 2014, except that in May and June Nonresident anglers can retain 2 Chinook salmon per day. Non-resident anglers have a yearly limit of 6 Chinook salmon in 2014 and all harvested Chinook salmon must be marked down on your harvest record.

All Chinook salmon must be 28 inches or larger to retain.

Regulations require all chartered anglers to use a deepwater release device if they release non pelagic rockfish.
