Freshwater Angling Update

Situk River- The steelhead run in the Situk has begun to head out in earnest. The daily weir count of downstream fish is over 300 fish. Considerable numbers are still spawning and or staged in the mid-river. Schools of bright fish are still located in a few of the larger holes.

Dolly Varden are common in the lower river and in some holes of the middle and upper river. Dollies are following the outmigration of salmon fry. The Dollies will likely head out and then return to feed on eggs when the sockeye and king spawners start to show.

Many of the streams in the forelands still have cutthroat spawners in them. These larger fish will feed as they head out on fry and aquatic insects.

Marine Angling

Chinook angling has been very good over the last few weeks. Anglers are getting limits of fish on some days and most catches contain a large fish of 30 lbs or more.

Halibut angling is picking up. Many medium sized fish have come in and a few large ones.

New halibut regulations in 2014 limit the charter boat halibut harvest to one fish of any size and one fish under 29 inches per angler, unless the charter boat captain provides for a second fish of any size with halibut harvest quota available for purchase. Talk to the charter boat captain about this possibility.

Lingcod angling opened on the 16th. A few fish have come in to those looking for that species. Fish upwards of 20lbs have been landed.

Regulations require all chartered anglers to use a deepwater release device if they release non pelagic rockfish.
