Freshwater Angling Update

Situk River- The sockeye angling is good on the Situk River. Weir counts are right around average for this time of year, and water conditions are ideal. Fishing effort is low right now also. Chinook salmon numbers are still low but a few fish are entering the river every day. All adult Chinook salmon must be released; only jacks (< 20 inches) can be harvested.

Dolly Varden angling is also very good from the middle sections on down to tidewater. Some resident rainbows can also be found in waters above 9 mile bridge.

Foreland streams- Akwe River Chinook salmon angling has been fair and the good king angling on the East River continues. Sockeye are just now starting to show in good numbers on the Italio and Akwe rivers.

Cutthroat trout angling has been fair in small Yakutat area streams and out in the bigger streams on the Forelands.

Marine Angling Update

Halibut angling is very good. Lingcod angling has finally improved in recent days as well. The larger fish of both species are being caught in close to town by Ocean cape.

Black rockfish are being harvested in good numbers now also.

Chinook angling is tapering off a bit as anglers target other species. A few early coho have been caught. Expect coho angling to pick up in July and peak in late July or August.

Regulations require all chartered anglers to use a deepwater release device if they release non pelagic rockfish.
