Presentations Highlight Dall Sheep Hunter Opinions, Sheep Harvest Data

New information featuring Alaska Dall sheep hunters’ opinions will be discussed this month at public presentations in Anchorage and Fairbanks. University of Alaska Fairbanks Assistant Professor Dr. Todd Brinkman will present results from opinion surveys distributed last summer to sheep hunters, guides, transporters and air taxi operators. An additional presentation based upon existing Alaska Department of Fish and Game survey and harvest data will provide context including sheep population and harvest information from across the state.

Prompted by concerns expressed to the Alaska Board of Game over Dall sheep harvest opportunities – including dissatisfaction over increasing conflicts among Alaska resident sheep hunters, hunting guides, transporters, and nonresident sheep hunters – the opinion survey was conducted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks through a contract with the department. The survey sought information about sheep hunter characteristics, behaviors and preferences, while attempting to quantify the extent of hunter satisfaction or dissatisfaction with current sheep hunting opportunities and the extent of hunter approval or disapproval of potential changes to sheep hunting regulations and management.

The presentations are open to the public and scheduled as follows:

  • The Fairbanks presentation will be held at Murie Auditorium on the UAF campus on November 19, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • The Anchorage meeting will be held at Loussac Library on November 21, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
