State Applauds Decision to Remove Eastern Population of Steller Sea Lions from Endangered Species List

(Juneau) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game applauds the decision of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to remove the eastern population of Steller sea lions from the endangered species list.

“We are pleased the federal government agreed with the sound science presented by the states of Alaska, Washington, and Oregon. Stellar Sea Lions have clearly recovered and no longer require protection under the Endangered Species Act,” said Doug Vincent-Lang, Director of the Division of Wildlife Conservation.

“We look forward to working with the NMFS to ensure for the continued health of this population into the future,” Vincent-Lang added.

The states of Alaska, Washington, and Oregon requested this action by submitting a delisting petition to the NMFS in 2010. Removal of Stellar sea lions from the endangered species list also removes federal burdens placed on fishermen, private and state landowners, and others who may have come into contact with the sea lions.
