Run Forecasts and Harvest Projections for 2017 Alaska Salmon Fisheries and Review of the 2016 Season Report Published

(Juneau) — The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) announces release of the statewide Run Forecasts and Harvest Projections for 2017 Alaska Salmon Fisheries and Review of the 2016 Season report.

The 2016 statewide salmon harvest included nearly 53 million sockeye salmon—the fifth largest harvest since 1970—but only 39 million pink salmon, the smallest harvest since 1977. The 2017 salmon forecast is for approximately average-size commercial harvests of sockeye salmon (41 million) and pink salmon (142 million). If realized, the 2017 forecast total harvest of 204 million salmon would be substantially greater than the 112.5 million salmon harvested during 2016; owing mostly to larger projected numbers of pink salmon harvested during 2017 than during 2016.
