Invasive Species — Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus)
Pathways

There are numerous pathways for rats into Alaska. The most common way is for rats to “stow away” in shipping containers or cargo holds. Most rat infestations in Alaska have resulted from rats escaping from ships while in port. Rats that are kept as pets, as pet food, or laboratory animals can also establish populations if intentionally or unintentionally released.
