Tsiu River Coho Salmon

Description

The Tsiu River is located approximately 100 miles west of Yakutat and is one of the premier coho salmon fisheries in the state. This fishery attracts anglers from mid-August through September. Most anglers choose to use guided lodge facilities for this remote fishery; however, it is also possible to fly in for day trips when weather conditions allow.

Average catch rates for coho salmon on the Tsiu River are approximately 20 fish per day, per angler. The shallow clear river, and the open landscape make fly-fishing very effective on the Tsiu. Fishable sections are limited to the bottom 5 miles of river. Anglers staying in lodge facilities typically use 4-wheelers to access fishing locations. For anglers flying in for day trips from Yakutat, Cordova, or Anchorage there are several sand airstrips in the area for small planes to land on.
