Cutthroat trout

Description

Anglers wanting to target cutthroat trout should consider chartering a flight to one of many US Forest Service cabins (http://www.recreation.gov/) in the Juneau management area. Many lakes in the area are managed to ensure production of large cutthroat; as a result, fishing regulations in these lakes are relatively conservative. In most of these lakes, cutthroat must be at least 14 inches in length. Five lakes (Lake Guerin, Turner, Distin, Hasselborg, and Jims lakes) in the area are managed to produce ‘trophy’ cutthroat trout, with a minimum size requirement of 25 inches and a bag and possession limit of one fish.

Tackle

Anglers targeting cutthroat trout near Juneau typically use very small spinners, spoons and flies. There are a variety of lure colors and patterns of flies that work well throughout the year. Very bright flashy lures work well and small salmon fry fly patterns as well as small nymphs, wooly buggers and leech patterns are a good choice.
