Pacific Herring (SE AK)
Under Federal Consideration for Protection
In 2007, the Juneau chapter of the Sierra Club petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to list the Lynn Canal stock of Pacific Herring as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This petition was ultimately rejected because NMFS determined that the Lynn Canal stock was not a distinct population segment. However, NMFS initiated a status review for Southeast Alaska Pacific herring, the larger distinct population segment that contained the Lynn Canal stock. The Southeast Alaska Pacific herring is a candidate under the ESA.
