Marine fishing

Marine fishing harvest success information can be found by following the link above right, “marine harvest rates”.

  • Coho angling was fair in ocean waters. Boats are still bringing in limits of coho from a full day trip. Coho angling this time of year will be dependent on weather and bad weather is common. Good trolling days and flat water are limited in fall.
  • Coho angling at small stream mouths in Yakutat Bay is beginning to slow. High water from heavy rains last week let most of the coho get up stream in the many small stream waters of this area.
  • Halibut angling remains productive. Charter boats are getting fish on most trips that can get out to the open bay moraine. Halibut effort dropped considerably in the recent weeks.
  • Rockfish and lingcod catches are still good in most areas of Yakutat Bay. Mixed bags of all species are still coming in to anglers that spend some time over rock piles looking for these fish.

Freshwater Fishing

  • The Situk River Coho fishery is fair. Before recent rains angling was great for a short time as the river dropped and some late new fish came into the lower river. High water has let the fish ascend now, and fishing has slowed. Expect that early next week will be an improvement for river flow conditions. Most coho will begin to spawn soon and the fishery will decline.
  • Dolly Varden angling throughout the rivers in the Yakutat area is excellent now. Fish are colored up and feeding heavily on coho spawn, before they too will spawn in late October.
  • Cutthroat trout have moved into spawning areas of coho salmon and can be found in the Lost River drainage and other similar small streams.
  • Eastern stream coho angling is good. Italio, Akwe, and East rivers are all still producing coho to lodge clients and fly out anglers from Yakutat.
  • Tsiu River angling has begun to slow. Most of the lodges are now closing up shop. Angling is still reportedly strong when the river flows recede. High water last week caused significant flooding issues in this area.
