Marine fishing

Marine fishing harvest success information can be found by following the link above right, “marine harvest rates”.

  • Coho angling in salt water has begun to wind down. Boat anglers can still find some good catches of coho, but success has been spotty, and weather conditions are starting to deteriorate for the season. Coho angling in close to stream mouths in Yakutat Bay is still good but will begin to slow soon also as the fish ascend the streams to spawn.
  • Halibut angling is still good. Boats are still getting limits out on the Yakutat Bay moraine, and out around Ocean Cape. Halibut angling effort dropped considerably last week and will likely go to almost nothing by October as the weather worsens.
  • Lingcod angling has slowed and the season for lingcod ends November 30.
  • Rockfish can still be caught now and all through the winter months in Yakutat Bay.
  • A few feeder Chinook salmon are still being caught, but the normal “winter king” fishery will not start till November.

Freshwater Fishing

  • The Situk River Coho fishery is fair. Anglers are finding fish in certain areas. These spots produced good catches for a time, but the fish are moving on to upper reaches of the streams to spawn fairly quickly this year.
  • East side streams had reportedly good angling for coho late last week. Anglers are reporting most days with 20 fish or more landed.
  • Tsiu river angling remains fair to good. Fish are holed up in the lake and move fast through the lower river at each tide.
  • Lost River and Tawah Creek coho angling was fair most of the season and improved late in the week.
  • Some of the smaller streams west of Yakutat are also producing good catches this year for coho anglers.
  • Dolly Varden angling is great right now on the Situk and many other small streams. Dollies are all colored up and beginning to look for spawning locations.
