Marine fishing

Chinook angling has been fair in the Bay. Chinook Anglers are getting fish in the inner coves and more out on the outside by the moraine. Warm weather made for some pleasant angling last week, but some days were windy forcing angers in closer to shore. Areas farther up the bay near Chicago harbor were also better than the inner island area.

Halibut angling has been good the last week with several larger than average fish being caught in close by at the Mouth of Monti Bay. Most good halibut angling is out on the mouth of Yakutat Bay on underwater hills created by the old glacial moraine.

Freshwater Fishing

Dry weather has drawn down many of the local streams. Cutthroat Trout are focused in the larger pools of small streams. Salmon fry are abundant this year and dollies are concentrated at stream mouths looking for this food source.

Steelhead Update

Steelhead angling is still good in the Situk. Mid day sunshine in recent days had turned off the bite but mornings and evenings have been good. Most fish are at their spawning sites now and have begun to spawn. A few new fish are still entering the river and are moving up quickly through the lower section to mid river. The river is quite low right now with flows well below average.
