Marine fishing

Marine fishing harvest success information can be found by following the link above right, “marine harvest rates”.

  • Coho angling in salt waters continues to be good. More fish are now in by the stream mouths, and anglers can reach these fish from shore or with a small boat or canoe.
  • Angling for coho in Ankau Lagoon has been fair this year, and Village Lagoon has been slow.
  • Pink salmon are still common in the stream mouth areas. The pink salmon runs appear to be continuing late this year.
  • Halibut angling remains excellent and some of the effort is starting to drop off. The Labor Day weekend is traditionally the weekend that most halibut effort starts to drop off, although the fishing should remain good into October.
  • Lingcod success fell a bit lately. Not as many of these fish were brought in last week.
  • Rockfish catches are still high. Many boats have been getting large catches of black rockfish, along with a few non pelagic species also.

Freshwater Fishing

  • Coho angling was fair most of the week. High tides are bringing in fresh schools and anglers can get limits if they time the fishing right. Most good angling for coho is in the lower stretches of the Situk and Lost Rivers.
  • All Yakutat road system streams are at average flows, and good for angling.
  • Eastern foreland streams have a few coho, but these streams, like the Italio and East rivers, will get their peak numbers of coho a bit later than Yakutat road system streams.
  • Tsiu river coho reports are that fishing is good with each tide. Fish are moving quickly into the marsh area and fishing with the tides has been most productive.
  • Tawah Creek has a larger than normal run of pink salmon this year. Angling for coho has been difficult on this stream as spawning pinks have hogged up all of the space.
