Marine fishing

Marine fishing harvest success information can be found by following the link above right “marine harvest rates” .

  • Coho angling is getting good in the ocean waters around Yakutat bay. A few fish are in close to stream mouths, but most are still being caught in the open bay waters. Expect coho angling to peak for salt waters in the next week or so.
  • Effort in the bottomfish fisheries has slowed a bit. Halibut angling remains good, as does angling for lingcod. Large fish will move into stream mouth estuaries this time of year to follow spawning pink salmon. This makes the large specimens accessible to smaller skiffs and even shores anglers.
  • Chinook salmon are still being caught in Yakutat Bay, but few anglers are targeting those fish this time of year.

Freshwater Fishing

  • Sockeye angling on the Situk remains good. More than 94,000 sockeye are past the Situk weir. Water flows have receded and are at good levels for angling.
  • Pink salmon angling is also very good in all local rivers. Akwe, Italio and East rivers, all have large numbers of pink salmon for angling.
  • Dolly Varden are starting to turn color in preparation to spawn, and are packed up in areas of salmon spawning. These fish will spawn in late October in small streams, but will feed heavily until that time.
  • Cutthroat trout are also in areas in the smaller local streams where salmon spawn. These fish will move into wintering areas in lakes as the season progresses.
