Marine fishing

  • Halibut angling is ramping up in Yakutat, and has been good for several weeks. Chinook trolling was sporadic in recent days, and the fish are spread out. Some anglers have caught Chinook from shore in areas of Yakutat bay.
  • Lingcod angling remains strong. Anglers have caught many good sized lings out on the rocky pinnacles, and off of Ocean Cape.
  • Some sockeye salmon are now also jumping out in Yakutat bay if anglers choose to chase those fish.
  • Black rockfish were harveted last week in fair numbers, along with a few other rockfish of various species.  Rockfish angling in the Yakutat area is largely influenced by the number of halibut anglers that decide to go after those fish.

Freshwater Fishing

  • Sockeye are moving into the Situk River in small schools. Sockeye have been landed in areas ~ 1 mile up from the mouth. Some have passed the weir in small numbers, but most are below the weir site.
  • A few Chinook have also been seen in East River and Akwe River as well as the Situk.

Steelhead Update

  • Steelhead angling is basically over on the Situk River. A few hundred are still going down past the weir each night, but these are all tired out kelts. This will be the last steelhead update until this coming fall. The final steelhead count will likely end up at around 7,000 fish.
