Marine fishing

  • Halibut angling remains very good in Yakutat Bay waters. All boats are getting into fish daily. A 375lb. Halibut was recorded at the dock last week. Harsh weather put a small damper on angling effort last week, but catches remained strong.
  • Black rockfish catches were particularly strong last week. All boats reported double digit catches of these smaller marine fish. Black rockfish are most often found in mid water off of rocky points and slopes.
  • Lingcod angling was fair last week. Most boats had a few of these large greenlings.
  • Chinook salmon trolling was fair last week with very sporadic catches in only some of the boats. Many of the Chinook lately, have been smaller feeder fish.

Freshwater Fishing

  • Sockeye salmon angling in local rivers is starting off fair. The Situk River has some fish in the lower river. High water has kept the fish down low in the system. Some sockeye are also in the smaller rivers of the east forelands, at the Akwe, and East Rivers.
  • Chinook salmon angling was reportedly slow in The East and Akwe rivers last week.
  • Dolly Varden angling is good in the Situk River and other small streams near Yakutat.
  • Trout angling slowed a bit with the high water. Most of these fish will move into areas at stream mouths, and wood    debris cover to spend the summer ambushing small salmon fry. They will also be in areas of salmon spawn when that begins.
  • Steelhead angling is still possible in the Situk River but weir counts are down to only 3 or 4 fish per day as essentially the entire run has left the river.
