Salt water angling harvest information is available via the link above right; “Marine Harvest Rates”.

Chinook salmon angling regulations for marine waters in SE Alaska including Yakutat have changed in-season this year as of July 1.

  • Residents; Daily and possession limit of two fish.
  • Non residents; Daily and possession limit of 1 fish, and a yearly limit of 3 fish.
  • All harvested fish must be 28 inches or larger.

Marine Fishing

  • Halibut angling was good again last week with most boats getting limits fairly quickly. One or two bad weather days set back some trips but all days produced some good fishing. Anglers are restricted to one fish of any size, and one small fish. Angler reports at the dock show that many of the large fish are over 150 lbs.
  • Lingcod angling has gotten a bit spottier. Some boats report good catches and others can’t find them, especially on certain days when the waters get murky. The warm weather these days is producing large plumes of glacial water input that clouds up the bay waters.
  • Rockfish angling, especially for black rockfish, remains good. Also a few more yelloweye came in this last week than previously.
  • Coho salmon are starting to show up more commonly in bag limits of salmon trollers. One or two boats caught multiple coho last week.
  • Chinook salmon angling has now started to slow. Anglers can find a few feeder fish out among the baitfish schools in the bay, and off of Ocean Cape.

Freshwater Fishing

  • Water conditions in all streams are low and clear.
  • Sockeye salmon angling on the Situk River is excellent. Weir counts have gone above average and the fish are all the way up to the lake. Angler’s in all stretches of the river report good catches most days.
  • Dolly Varden are also very abundant these days in the Situk and most other streams of The Forelands. Recent years of high salmon counts have bolstered the abundance of these fish that feed on the spawn. Large fish, larger than sockeye salmon, are common now on the Situk.
  • Italio River reportedly has many sockeye moving into the lower end.
  • East River has also reportedly gotten very good this last week for sockeye.
  • A few early pink salmon were spotted on various streams of the forelands last week.
  • Chinook angling in the Akwe and East river has been fair. Most fish are moving out of the lower river areas quickly.
