Marine fishing

Marine fishing harvest success information can be found by following the link above right “marine harvest rates” .

  • Halibut angling slowed a bit last week largely due to a few less anglers and effort. Anglers are still getting large fish out on the open bay waters and some smaller ones in close to shore, in Monti Bay.
  • Coho angling is picking up steam and angling effort is beginning to shift towards that species. Right now the fish are being picked up in the open bay waters trolling, but soon they will be in by local stream mouths of Yakutat Bay. Coho can be caught by casting spoons and spinners near these stream mouths in fall.
  • Rockfish and lingcod angling remain good. Lingcod will get a bit harder to find as pink salmon move into the bay and the lings start chasing them for food.
  • Pink salmon are also in the bay waters now, and staring to show up at small stream mouths. Most anglers ignore these fish, but they can be good angling to shore anglers, especially young kids learning to fish.

Freshwater Fishing

  • Sockeye angling on the Situk remains good. Some high water flows this last week moved the fish up river. Almost 80,000 sockeye were past the Situk weir as of monday night.
  • Pink salmon are now also in the Situk River in large numbers, with a coho or two.
  • Dolly Varden are starting to pack up behind spawning salmon schools in the middle Situk river sections. Many larger dollies are available this year.
  • Stream mouths of Yakutat Bay have schools of pink salmon starting to build up in the estuaries.
  • Cutthroat trout angling has been fair in local small streams in the holes with woody debris for cover. These fish will also move out onto spawning salmon areas to feed on salmon spawn.
