Marine fishing

Marine fishing harvest success information can be found by following the link above right “marine harvest rates”.

  • Coho angling in salt water has heated up this last week. Many boats report multiple and full limits trolling out in the areas around Khantaak Island, and especially out farther off Ocean Cape. A few fish are also in close by stream mouths.
  • Pink salmon are in around the stream mouths in large numbers. Streams near Knight Island, and those around Humpy Creek are all full of pinks inriver, and at the mouth.
  • Chinook angling improved a bit last week with several boats getting multiple fish. Some large kings came in last week also. Angling for this species will likely slow considerably as the month goes on.
  • Halibut angling remains good. Halibut spread out a bit when the pink salmon come in, but can still be caught on into late fall in the normal spots at Yakutat Bay mouth, and on other underwater hills of the inner bay.
  • Lingcod and rockfish catches fell a bit last week. Anglers are switching to salmon fishing and tend not to target these fish as the fall approaches.

Freshwater Fishing

  • Sockeye angling on the Situk River and other foreland streams has about ended. The fish are still there but numerous pink salmon have swamped the rivers. New incoming sockeye are rare, but some still enter in each tide. Unlike the earlier fish, these sockeye are larger, but hard to find in the pink salmon schools.
  • Pink salmon schools are streaming into most foreland streams. This year’s pink salmon are reported to be much larger than average. Pink salmon will continue to run strong on through August, but will slow in September.
  • A few coho are in the Situk and Lost river drainages. These fish are relatively scattered but building in the lower rivers, and most are small this time of year.
  • Dolly Varden angling is great in areas of salmon spawning. These fish will take egg imitation flies, and fry patterns skated on the surface. Most Dollies are well up the foreland streams in the spawning areas of sockeye and pink salmon.
