Marine fishing

Chinook trolling has picked up so that most anglers are getting fish on every trip. Trolling has been good in the area around Sawmill and Redfield coves. Herring are moving in closer and should be spawning soon in local bays.

No reports have come in of any halibut angling yet.

Freshwater Fishing

Cutthroat trout have moved in good numbers into smaller creeks on the forelands. The  Akwe and Italio rivers on the forelands and Lost River closer to Yakutat have large runs of trout. High waters last week after the rains have let the fish move into smaller streams and towards their spawning sites.

The emergence of salmon fry has begun and Dolly Varden have moved in to feed on those fish. Expect that this will improve as the waters warm and more salmon fry come out.

Steelhead Update

High waters and rain last week made things more difficult for steelhead anglers on the Situk River this last weekend. Prior to the rains some spring fish were beginning to show in the lower river and some were entering the river on each tide. Eulachon in the lower river thinned out a bit with the high waters but will likely start to pack up again as the waters recede.

Fish are still a bit more numerous in the upper sections of the river by Nine Mile Bridge.

Weather conditions in Yakutat in the early spring can limit your access to the Situk River. Anglers should be prepared for potential weather related delays and be aware that roads may become totally impassable quickly with little warning.
