The Anvik River sonar site uses a type of sonar technology known as DIDSON to detect fish. Two DIDSON transducers are deployed at the Anvik sonar site, one for each bank. Each DIDSON is mounted on an aluminum frame, submerged into the river near the bank and aimed perpendicular to the current. Sonar site technicians beach seine Anvik River fish to collect data from salmon. All resident fish are tallied by species andreleased. Pink salmon are counted, identified by gender and released. When a chum or king salmon is caught, technicians identify them by gender, measure them and take scale samples for determining the age of the fish. The Anvik River sonar project is located approximately 46 miles upstream of the mouth of the Anvik River, a tributary of the Yukon River, and monitors the escapement of summer chum salmon. Technicians install a partial weir extending from the submerged sonar transducer to shore to prevent large fish from swimming behind the transducer where they cannot be detected. The Anvik River is believed to be the largest producer of summer chum salmon in the Yukon River drainage. Commercial and subsistence fishermen harvest Anvik River chum salmon in the Yukon River from the delta to the mouth of the Anvik River and within the first 12 miles of the Anvik River. The Anvik River drains into the Yukon River. Its confluence with the Yukon is about
one mile upstream of the village of Anvik.
