Southeast Alaska
Wildlife Viewing

black bear From the bears of Hyder to the bald eagles of Haines, from the whales of Frederick Sound to the birds of the Stikine River, Southeast Alaska delivers extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities. In this section, you’ll find links to more than 75 wildlife viewing sites in and around the communities of Gustavus, Haines, Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Prince of Wales Island, Sitka, Skagway, and Wrangell. The information on these pages is based on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s wildlife viewing guides printed for each community. These brochures are available in print form by contacting each community’s local visitor bureau, or downloadable as pdfs from this website.

Wildlife viewing trails in other states are connected via road systems. The communities along the Alaska Coastal Wildlife Viewing Trail are linked instead by the ferries of Alaska's Marine Highway System, designated an "All-American Road" by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2005. The ferries provide additional chances to see wildlife and ADF&G has published a guidebook, Alaska's Inside Passage Wildlife Watching Guide, which contains information and tips for watching wildlife along Southeast Alaska’s inland waterways. For more information about this publication or to request a copy, contact the Division of Wildlife Conservation at (907) 465-4190 or email dfg.dwc.hq-info@alaska.gov.
