Gray-headed Chickadee Conservation

The Gray-headed Chickadee is among the rarest landbirds in North America and only occurs in Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and the western edge of the North West Territories, Canada. Though once considered common in some locations, it appears to now be rare. The TED Program has led a nine-year effort to document the current and historical range of this species to better understand the status of this enigmatic songbird of the north. Recent research results suggest the species has declined in both its range and abundance in recent decades. Currently, there are only a handful of confirmed sightings annually in North America and signs of nesting is rare. The TED program continues to partner with interested parties in both Alaska and Canada to find existing populations of this species and try to understand why it may be declining.
