Alaska Bycatch Information Portal

Overview

Alaska's fisheries are vital to our economy, food security, and cultural heritage. All fisheries have some degree of bycatch. It is nearly impossible to provide fishing opportunities with zero bycatch and continued efforts are needed to minimize bycatch and bycatch mortality to the extent practical. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) supports ongoing efforts to reduce bycatch through continued research, effective science-based management, and public engagement.

At a federal level, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) continues to build on existing regulatory programs addressing bycatch of species that are immeasurably important to Alaskans and the nation using a deliberative process required by federal law that balances conservation, economic, and social considerations across diverse user groups. Both ADF&G and NPFMC recognize that bycatch is an important issue requiring coordinated action across jurisdictions.

ADF&G developed the Alaska Bycatch Information Portal to provide transparent access to data, research, and management actions related to bycatch in Alaska's fisheries. This portal supports informed public engagement and highlights collaborative efforts across fishery management jurisdictions to address this complex issue. Through this portal, we aim to foster understanding, transparency, and collaboration in the ongoing effort to sustain Alaska's fisheries for future generations.
