An Alaska Fishing Challenge Built for the Long Haul
The Master the Waters Program challenges anglers to explore Alaska's incredible fisheries and pursue some of the state's most impressive sport fish.
There is no time limit to finish. Build your skills, explore new waters, and document qualifying catches as you work toward recognition in one or all three categories.
First Step
Register Before You Begin
Registration is required. After registering, you will receive the official Master the Waters fillable tracking form by email.

Choose Stream, Stillwater, or Saltwater and register for the program.

Before You Fish
Know the Rules
The details matter. Keep this section handy as you work through your challenge.
- All fish must be caught on rod and reel (hook and line) in accordance with all applicable and current Alaska sport fishing regulations.
- Both harvested and catch-and-release fish qualify.
- Anglers must provide documentation for every qualifying catch.
- Fish must be caught in the designated habitat type.
- Fish must be identifiable by species.
- Photographs should clearly show the angler and fish; include a size reference for scale - a tape measurer is best.
- Size requirements apply to adult divisions only.
- A fish may only count toward one qualifying species category.
- Anglers are encouraged to practice responsible handling and release techniques when releasing fish.
Before beginning your challenge:
- Register by email to receive your official Master the Waters tracking form.
- You will receive a fillable PDF that allows you to record your qualifying catches, including:
- Species caught
- Date of catch
- Location of catch
- Size of fish
- Additional notes
- Maintain your tracking form throughout your journey.
- When you have completed all requirements, submit your completed form and required documentation for verification.
Registration helps ensure your accomplishments can be recognized and celebrated as part of the Master the Waters community.

Master Stream Angler
Rivers, streams, and sloughs.
Catch each required species in flowing water while meeting the adult minimum size requirement.
Master Stillwater Angler
Stillwater fisheries across Alaska.
Catch each required species in stillwater while meeting the adult minimum size requirement.
Master Saltwater Angler
Alaska's marine and brackish waters.
Catch each required species in saltwater while meeting the adult minimum size requirement.
The Ultimate Achievement
Elite Master Angler
Complete all three Master the Waters challenges - Stream, Stillwater, and Saltwater - to earn recognition as an Elite Master Angler.
Elite status represents mastery across Alaska's flowing waters, lakes and ponds, and marine fisheries.
Youth Master the Waters
Same Adventure. No Minimum Fish Size.
The Youth Master the Waters Program introduces young anglers to Alaska's incredible sport fisheries and encourages exploration, learning, and conservation.
Anglers must be 15 or younger at the time they complete the challenge. Youth anglers meet the same species requirements as adult anglers but do not have minimum size requirements unless otherwise specified.
Catch each species in flowing water:
- Chinook Salmon
- Coho Salmon
- Sockeye Salmon
- Pink Salmon
- Chum Salmon
- Rainbow Trout (non-anadromous)
- Dolly Varden
- Arctic Grayling
- Steelhead*
*Steelhead must be verifiable as a steelhead through key identifiers or known locations.
Catch each species in stillwater (lakes or ponds):
- Brook Trout
- Lake Trout
- Northern Pike
- Burbot
- Rainbow Trout
- Arctic Grayling
- Arctic Char
- Whitefish (any species)
Catch each species in saltwater (brackish water qualifies):
- Pacific Halibut
