Petersburg-Wrangell Management Area
Fishing Opportunities

Steelhead

Description

Many streams in the Petersburg/Wrangell management area support small, spring runs of steelhead.   Most steelhead systems in Southeast Alaska have less than 200 fish return annually. As a result, steelhead sport fisheries are managed conservatively, with restrictive size, bag, and possession limits, and bait being prohibited in some systems.  Some streams in the area that host populations of Steelhead are Petersburg Creek, Bear Creek, Ohmer Creek, Kah Sheets, Marten Creek, Eagle river, and Kunk Creek/Lake.

Tackle

To target steelhead, anglers commonly use spin casting gear with fish yarn, corkies, or spinners, or fly-fishing gear using flies that imitate eggs or bright attractor patterns.

Getting There

These systems can be accessed by local roads, boats, or by floatplane; however, persistent snow pack in the spring can make fishing access difficult.
