Windfall River Salmon Research

While commonly used, mark-recapture experiments are seldom validated. To test the feasibility of replacing a weir with a mark-recapture methodology, both methods were employed simultaneously on a stream near Juneau, Alaska, to count and sample the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka escapement.

Taku River Salmon Stock Assessment

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Taku River Tlingit First Nation cooperatively perform research on Chinook, sockeye, and coho salmon populations in the Taku River each year. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Fish Division conducts research on Chinook and coho salmon whereas the Commercial Fisheries Division focuses on sockeye, pink, and chum salmon.
