Coal Mine #5 Cabin

View of the cabin from the west.The Coal Mine #5 cabin is located on a knoll above the east shore of Coal Mine #5 Lake, 23 miles south of Delta Junction in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Coal Mine #5 Lake is approximately 9 acres and is stocked by ADF&G with rainbow trout, landlocked Chinook salmon, Arctic char, and lake trout. Amenities: Coal Mine #5 Lake cabin sleeps six adults and is equipped with plywood bunks, benches, a table, wood stove, broom and dustpan, shovel, smoke/carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher, outdoor fire ring, picnic table, and nearby outhouse.

Directions: GPS Coordinates: Latitude: N 63.7176 Longitude: W 145.8216. The cabin is accessed from Coal Mine Road, located on the east side of the Richardson Highway at MP 242.1. Leaving from the highway, follow the unmaintained road 1.8 miles to the Y in the road and turn left. Continue another 0.6 miles past Backdown Lake and follow the small ATV trail to the left down to the cabin (2.4 miles total). Please be aware that the road is primitive, not maintained and not typically passable by a highway vehicle without high ground clearance and 4-wheel drive. Off-road vehicles exceeding 1,500 pounds may require a permit, please contact the Glennallen BLM office at 907-822-3217. No off-roading, off-road vehicle travel is restricted to designated routes on BLM managed land in this area when there is not sufficient snow cover. Please stay on existing trails when snow cover is insufficient to provide protection of the land and vegetation. Please consider parking at the pull-off along the Richardson Highway and continue by foot or by ATV. Winter trail conditions can be extremely variable due to high winds causing drifting snow and exposed ground in some areas.

Special Notes: Pets are allowed but should be under your control, and you are responsible for cleaning up your pet waste. Be aware that unmarked traplines may be present along trails. Trap Safety for Pet Owners.

What to Bring: Cabin users should bring a sleeping bag and pad, food, cookware, dishes, utensils, cooking stove and fuel, matches, lighters, paper fire starters, first aid items, insect repellent, plastic trash bags, firewood (maximum length of 17 inches), flashlight, axe, lantern, water or some way to purify water onsite, and 2 AA batteries for the smoke/carbon monoxide detector.
