Clarifying the Status of Fishing Regulations by Commissioner Vincent-Lang

We've been getting a lot of questions lately about the status of regulation changes adopted by the Alaska Board of Fisheries (BOF) during their 2025/2026 meeting cycle. I'll try to answer some of these questions the best I can.

Below is the status of the regulation changes, grouped by BOF meeting:

Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Finfish, November 18-22, 2025

The regulations from the proposals adopted during this meeting became effective on April 25, 2026. Note, however, that the Board also approved additional Yukon Area regulations via proposals 190 (PDF) and 191 (PDF) during their special meeting on May 1, 2026. The regulations from the May 1 meeting are expected to go into effect on June 17, 2026.

Bristol Bay Finfish, January 13-18, 2026

The regulation changes from this meeting were filed with the Office of the Lieutenant Governor on June 11 and should become effective on or about July 12, 2026. Fishery management will be based on the current regulations until the changes become effective. ADF&G staff will be having discussions about how to transition from current to new regulations midseason.

Alaska Peninsula/Aleutian Islands & Chignik Area Finfish, February 18-24, 2026

On May 20, 2026, the Attorney General informed the Lieutenant Governor (PDF) that they were disapproving the regulation changes adopted by the board in proposals 126, 127, 141, 147, and 148. The remaining regulation changes from this meeting are moving forward and are still under review by the Department of Law. The department will manage the fisheries based on the current regulations until the new regulations become effective. It is unknown at this time when that may be.

Statewide Finfish & Supplemental Issues

The regulations from this meeting are still being reviewed by the Department of Law. ADF&G will manage fisheries based on the current regulations until the new regulations become effective. It is unknown at this time when that may be.

Special meeting on May 1, 2026 (proposals 189-192)

The regulation changes from this meeting were filed with the Lieutenant Governor's office on May 19 and will become effective on June 17, 2026. The Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission (CFEC) met on June 4 to consider emergency regulations allowing beach seine gear in the Cook Inlet salmon fishery, however the CFEC did not adopt beach seines as an allowable gear. Based on conflicting BOF and CFEC actions regarding beach seine gear use and legal advice, I will not be issuing any experimental permits to use beach seine gear this season.

Additionally, the Division of Sport Fish issued a press release on June 10, explaining that several new regulations that were adopted by the BOF were printed in the 2026 sport fish regulations book but are not yet in effect.
