Walrus Tracking Maps Archive
07/211/2013 – 08/220/2013

Over the last ten days we received transmissions from 20 walruses (3 male and 17 female). The three males are generally located in coastal waters both north of the coast of Russia and between Wainwright and Barrow. Eleven of the females are still located near Hanna Shoal in the Chukchi Sea. Clouds in the southern Beaufort Sea have again obstructed MODIS satellite images over the last week. Therefore, we plotted the walrus tracks over sea ice concentration data available from the National Ice Center (http://www.natice.noaa.gov/).
We also collaborated with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and the Alaska SeaLife Center to hold a public meeting in Point Lay (5 August) to discuss current walrus research and monitoring efforts.
