Requested Tracking Map
We are pleased to announce that the North Slope Borough Department of Wildlife Management (NSB-DWM) and ADF&G collaborated to deploy tags on 3 spotted seals and 1 bearded seal from 14–17 August. The 3 spotted seals, SS16-04-M, SS16-05-F, and SS16-06-M were tagged in Dease Inlet with CTD tags (manufactured by the Seal Mammal Research Unit, University of St. Andrews, UK) attached to their backs and SPOT tags, provided by NOAA, attached to their flippers. The bearded seal, BS16-05-F, was tagged in Elson Lagoon with a SPOT tag attached to its flipper. Eight seals have been tagged as part of this collaborative project. Movements made by these seals will be reported on maps prepared by both ADF&G and NSB-DWM.

During the last twenty-one days we have received locations for 3 bearded seals, 3 ringed seals, and 5 spotted seal. Two bearded seals, BS16-01-M (green line) and BS16-04-F (purple line) are in Norton Sound. Ringed seal RS16-07-M (yellow line) is in the northern Chukchi Sea near sea ice. The rest of the seals are generally near Barrow, both offshore and in Dease Inlet. Three of the five spotted seals, SS16-03-M, SS16-04-M, and SS16-05-F, have left Dease Inlet after being tagged and have traveled south and west of Barrow along the Chukchi Sea coast. No clear satellite images were available from the NASA Rapid Response Network because of thick cloud cover this week. Therefore, sea ice data are provided courtesy of the University of Bremen, Germany, and dated 22 August (http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de:8084/amsr2/)
