North American Porcupine
(Erethizon dorsatum)

Return to the North American porcupine description page.

Porcupines are large rodents like beavers and have similar wood-chewing teeth that grow continuously. The orange enamel layer, seen here, is harder than the layer behind it, so it sharpens as it wears. This photo also shows the soft wooly underfur found under the longer, water-shedding guard hairs that cover the porcupine in addition to its famous quills. Photo by Riley Woodford/ADF&G.
