Fresh waters

Salmon

• King Salmon fishing on Ship Creek is the best we have seen in years. Two-ocean fish are returning in good numbers (fish stocked from William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery).
• The Ship Creek Slam’in Salmon Derby starts this Friday, June 13 and goes until Sunday, June 22. Take your dad fishing on Father’s Day. Derby tickets are free. If you want your Ship Creek king to be eligible, make sure to get your derby ticket before fishing.
• In Ship Creek, fishermen are catching good numbers of kings during both the incoming and out-going tides. Although the out-going tide has often been more productive than the incoming. Fishermen are having good success with both lures and cured salmon eggs. Fish are being caught throughout the fishable area, but many larger fish are being picked from the rail-road trusses up to the cable crossing below the Chugach Power Plant Dam.
• Ship Creek water has been clear, but with the recent rain we anticipate that the water clarity will be decreasing. To increase your odds with the decreasing water visibility, try using bright colors lures and good bait.
• This coming weekend is the last opener for Eagle River king salmon. Expect slow king salmon fishing in Eagle River.
• All other waters in the Anchorage Management Area are closed to king salmon fishing.

Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Grayling

Creek Fishing

• Campbell Creek, Chester Creek, and portions of Ship Creek will open to fishing this weekend just in time to take dad trout fishing for Father’s Day. Campbell Creek and Chester Creek have been stocked with rainbow trout. Fishing should be good.

Lake Fishing

• All local lakes have been stocked, except Lower Fire Lake. Rainbow trout fishing is good to very good in these lakes.
• Anglers have been reporting better success early in the morning or later in the evening. During these periods the fish are more actively feeding although fish are still being caught throughout the day also.
• Symphony Lake opens for fishing July 1st.

Northern Pike

• Late evening hours are a good time to spear or shoot pike with a bow and arrow.
• If you are bow-fishing for northern pike, the arrow has to be attached to a string and the string to your bow.
• Practice your bow-fishing and spearing skills for pike at Lower Fire Lake and Otter Lake.

Salt waters

Hooligan

• Hooligan fishing at the end of Turnagain Arm will close this coming Sunday. Dip netting for hooligan is a fun family activity so take your dad dip netting for hooligan for Father’s day.
• This is a personal-use fishery and only Alaska residents can participate. No permit is required, but you do need an Alaska resident fishing license or ADF&G Permanent ID card with you while dip netting.
• Dip netting for hooligan in Saltwater is closed as of May 31, so if you are fishing along the Seward Highway you are fishing in closed waters. The fresh water at Twentymile River remains open to hooligan dip netting until June 15 at 11:59 p.m.
• For additional information on hooligan dip netting see page 13 of the 2014 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations summary booklets.
