Saltwater Fishing
Marine angling effort remained high last week during the final weekend of the derby. Ketchikan’s King Salmon Derby was won by a 42.0 lb king salmon with a total of 823 king salmon entered. King salmon harvest reports have been good and should continue to improve thru the end of the month.

A few chum and coho have also started to make an appearance in the local marine fishery and they should only continue to build over the summer.

Although most effort this time of year is typically toward king salmon, anglers can still find good halibut fishing. Reports from the few anglers targeting them have been good and should continue to improve into summer.

Freshwater Fishing
Steelhead runs are winding down rapidly and many fish have already spawned and returned to saltwater. Roadside anglers should try Ward Creek for steelhead, or if remote fishing is on your agenda, give the Naha River, McDonald Lake, or Fish Creek a try.

Cutthroat and Rainbow trout fishing will also continue to improve with lakes now being ice free and water temperatures on the rise.

Dolly Varden fishing along the roadside/shoreline should continue to improve as water temperatures warm and Dolly Varden migrate from overwintering lakes. Lake outlets and streams that connect to the salt water are prime places to harvest these fish in the spring.

***Reminder
All anglers are responsible for knowing the current regulations for the area that they will be fishing. Regulation handbooks and copies of the most current regulatory changes are available on this website and at the Ketchikan ADF&G office, (907) 225-2859.
