Sport Fishing

Freshwater Fishing

Lake trout and burbot fishing have been good to excellent on Lake Louise, Susitna, and Tyone Lakes.

No reports from Paxson Lake, but Arctic grayling fishing from the Paxson Lake campground is almost always great during the summer.

The upper Gulkana River is running cold for this time of year, but is clear and should provide its usual great Arctic grayling opportunities as well as rainbow trout.

There isn’t a lot of fishing activity going on these days so a lot of great small fisheries are going unexploited. For a guide to where all these small fisheries are, check out our brochures, specifically Sportfishing Alaska rivers and lakes in the Upper Copper/Upper Susitna River Basin. This guide lists all the fisheries, species available, and mile markers along all the major highways crossing the Upper Copper and Upper Susitna Area.

Salmon

Sockeye is moving into the Klutina! at a steady pace, but fishing is spotty. Expect relatively long periods of no action interspersed with 30 minutes of great fishing. Don’t forget the Gulkana River for sockeye salmon as well. They are a little more challenging to catch there, but that is what makes it fun.

As of 12:01 a.m. Saturday, all king salmon sport fisheries in the Upper Copper River are closed and the flowing waters of the Gulkana, Klutina and Tonsina Rivers are restricted to unbaited, artificial lures
