Weekly Fishing Report

PERSONAL USE

Copper River Chitina Subdistrict will open Tuesday June 7th at 12:01 am through Sunday June 12th at 11:59 p.m., and will likely reopen for the week of June 13. Dipnetters may retain a king salmon during the first week of the fishery. The preliminary season schedule is based on the projected daily sonar counts at the Miles Lake sonar and is subject to change based on actual salmon escapement. If actual counts are below the projected counts, fishing time will be reduced. If actual counts are above the projected counts, fishing time will be increased accordingly. The sonar has been up and running for the last couple weeks.

LAKE TROUT

The larger lakes which include Lake Louise, Susitna, Tyone, Paxson, Summit and Crosswind Lakes are all clear of ice. Lake Louise is reported to be good fishing from first light to late morning, and then again from early evening on. Lakers should start feeding actively on migrating salmon smolt from Summit and Paxson lakes soon making for some good fishing at the mouths of these lakes. These larger lakes should continue to produce good catches of fish throughout the summer, but expect fish to move off shore to deeper waters as the temperature rises.

STOCKED LAKES

Catchable rainbow trout were stocked in most UCUS stocked lakes during the past week and all area lakes should be fully stocked by mid-next week. Try Old Road and Round lakes, off the Lake Louise Road. Two Mile, and Three Mile Lakes along the Edgerton Highway, and Pippin Lake on the Richardson Highway. Pippin Lake should have some larger fish in it this year as it had little to no winter kill this spring. For the best rainbow trout fishing head out the McCarthy Road to Strelna, Silver, and Sculpin lakes which offer the best opportunity to catch more and a possibility to catch larger fish. Silver Lake has walk in access only. Peanut and Tolsona Mountain Lakes are also excellent lakes for rainbow trout, but an ATV is helpful to access them.

WILD ARCTIC GRAYLING

Arctic grayling can be found in most area streams and lakes. Spawning has already occurred so most grayling will be found in lakes and larger rivers, but give those smaller streams a try still. Many of the small lakes on the Lake Louise and Nabesna roads contain grayling populations. Long Lake and Jack Lake are good bets for grayling. Poplar Grove, and Sourdough Creek are also another option for grayling fishing in the spring.

DOLLY VARDEN CHAR

Like grayling, Dolly Varden can be found in most area streams and lakes. The upper portions of Klutina River and the mouth of the lake can produce some very nice fish and are well worth the 20 miles of rough road to reach. Little Tonsina River is also a good choice for Dollies. Tiekel River has lots of small stunted Dolly Varden that can provide some fun fishing with light tackle. Also try the streams crossing the Nabesna Road for Dolly Varden.
